It is the site of Yangzhai, the capital of the State of Han during the Warring States period. Its population was 1,131,819 inhabitants at the 2010 census on 1472 km², even though the built-up (or metro) area, is much smaller. Yuzhou was known as Yingchuan () in the Qin, Han and Jin Dynasties.
